A month ago I shared my birthday wishlist with you. 2 weeks ago I shared with you a couple stories from the 3 people who won the birthday drawing.
Today I will share with you a little about what Andrew, Carl and Stephanie won from the birthday drawing. But first, I need your help with a little experiment.

The Experiment
I want to test an idea I hope to share with you in a couple of weeks, but I want to test it first. I have created a 3 question survey that you can find here. Can you please take it right away?
I promise to share with you what this survey is about, what my idea was and why that idea matters or, if I am wrong, why I thought it mattered.
Thank you for your help.
Signed In Blood
2 weeks ago Andrew, Carl and Stephanie each received a mysterious priority mail package from me. When they opened their packages they discovered another parcel wrapped in brown paper. On the front of that parcel was a message that read something like this (I paraphrase):

Signed In Blood
2 weeks ago Andrew, Carl and Stephanie each received a mysterious priority mail package from me. When they opened their packages they discovered another parcel wrapped in brown paper. On the front of that parcel was a message that read something like this (I paraphrase):
STOP!
Inside this package is a book. You may only open this package and receive your gift if you commit to start reading this book today and immediately take action on what this book tells you.
If you are making that commitment then sign and date on the line below in blood (or red ink). If you will not make that commitment then please pass this unopened package to someone you like.

The book that was inside these packages was The Icarus Deception: How High Will You Fly? by Seth Godin. If you've ever visited the Museum of Purpose for more than a few minutes or checked out the Motivate (Beta) Reading List, then you probably know that Seth Godin is one of my favorites.
Why I picked this book can be summed up well by this quote from the author during a thenextweb.com interview:
“…I called it the Icarus Deception, [because] people think the story says don’t fly too close to the sun,” he says. “But that’s not what it used to say. 150 years ago, it used to say ‘don’t fly too low’. Because if you fly too low, the mist and the water will weigh you down, and you will perish.”
It clearly fits with why, I hope, you read this blog and why I know I write it.
If I had the resources, instead of just sending a book each to Andrew, Carl and Stephanie, I would have probably sent each of you your own priority mail package containing a brown paper wrapped parcel with a blood red warning on front.
Read this book. But, before you head over to your local library or bookstore to get your copy, I need you to do 3 things first. Books are dangerous and it's important that you don't skip any of these steps.
First, check out this interview with Seth Godin on thenextweb.com. Just read the short written article.
Second, if you're still interested after you read the text, then check out the 20 minute video recording of the interview that is included on this page.
Third, if you still think this is for you then review my 3 rules about books here. If you can keep these rules and read The Icarus Deception, then print out a copy of the rules and write by hand "I, [write name here], swear to live by these 3 rules." Then, sign the sheet in blood...or red ink if you must, but blood somehow seems more serious.
If you go so far as to read this one, then please shoot me an email at sterlinglynk@att.net with your thoughts on the book. I respond to emails and I enjoy the interaction.
Be well,
Sterling Lynk
P.S. - You are lucky. Andrew, Carl and Stephanie didn't get the chance to check out interviews, watch videos and review some rules before signing their lives away. They only had brown paper and a warning to help them decided whether or not to take the plunge. Beware Sterling bearing gifts.
P.S.S. - Please don't forget to take the super quick survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/52YKG6D. This will help me out a lot. Thank you in advance.
