Engaging a coach can be a highly profound, productive and personal experience. As private of an experience as it, having a coach by your side helps you unleash your potential as a leader and as a champion of your own mighty purpose.
According to the International Coach Federation 70% of people who have engaged a professional coach have reported improved performance in the work they do, 80% reported an increase in confidence in themselves and their missions, and 86% of organizations who paid for their leaders and staff members to engage a coach reported a positive return on investment.

A Creative Partnership
When you engage a coach you are entering into a creative partnership around your own personal growth and development as a leader and as a contributor. To be clear, let's first talk about what coaching is not.
When you engage a coach you are entering into a creative partnership around your own personal growth and development as a leader and as a contributor. To be clear, let's first talk about what coaching is not.

- Coaching is not therapy. While a quality coaching process will engage the whole you (physical, social/emotional, mental and personal calling), it is not designed to improve mental health and functioning. Instead it is an experience where you achieve growth through self-identified and self-initiated change in pursuit specific goals and tangible actions.

- Coaching is not training. While a quality coaching process will include gaining clarity around objectives for the engagement, those objectives are not set by the coach. Instead you, along with your boss and an internal champion if your coaching is being sponsored by an employer, will determine the objectives. A coaching experience should be systematic and rigorous, but it is not a linear development experience inflexibly bounded by a set curriculum.

- Coaching is not consulting. A good consultant is like a good doctor; they will tell you how you are sick, prescribe a possible cure, and then administer that cure. Sometimes you may need the expertise a consultant can offer. On the other hand, a good coach will certainly share experiences, models, frameworks and ideas with you, but you are the one who will be able to identify and implement solutions. Consulting solves problems; coaching develops capabilities. You are empowered to be the expert in your own life-lived mission.

"Sterling believed from day one that I was capable of doing anything I wanted and set my heart on doing. This allowed me to begin believing in myself again. No matter the obstacle, Sterling was there to share his resources and keep me moving towards my goal."

So what is coaching then? Coaching is about setting goals, creating tangible results, your development and unleashing your potential. A coach as creative partner will help you if you find yourself in any of these situations:
- You have something urgent, inspiring, or challenging on your plate.
- You lack clarity on what direction you should take.
- You have a gap in your understanding, confidence, or resources
- You need to identify and leverage your core strengths.
- You desire to speed up the results you are getting in your work or calling.
- Your different life roles (job, family, community, calling, etc.) are poorly integrated or out of balance.
- You have been very successful but now that success has become a challenge.

Like any development experience, coaching is a process. At MightyPurpose a coaching engagement progresses through 4 phases.
- Chemistry Check: This is a no cost and obligation initial conversation scheduled for 45 minutes. The purpose is two fold: first, to determine if you and the coach "click" well enough to form a creative partnership; and, second to determine if the coach has what you need to be useful. Schedule your initial conversation day by emailing Sterling at sterlinglynk@att.net or calling (608)698-6055.
- Agenda Setting: This 60 to 90 minute session kicks off the coaching engagement. This is where you set the development goals and performance priorities for the coaching experience. If your coaching experience is being sponsored by an organization your direct supervisor (if you have one) and an internal mentor/champion will also be included in this conversation.
- Assessment: You will participate in a suite of assessment tools that will give you insight into both your strengths, your fundamental motivations, and how others perceive you. The results will be shared with you during a 60 to 90 minute session. You and your coach will use the results as a compass for charting a path to achieving your coaching objectives. If your coaching is being sponsored by an organization it is important to note that this is not an evaluation and the results, no matter what, will not be shared with others in your organization without your express permission. You "own" all the data and you control who has access to it.
- Action Taking: These 60 minute sessions are the heart of your experience. The sessions are organized by a consistent series of questions that will affirm your objectives and your progress, identify and reinforce accountability for action items, take measure of changes in the environment, and tune the coach's approach to your needs. Once again you will "own" all of the data from all interactions with your coach during this phase, and it will not be shared without your express permission. If your experience is being sponsored by an organization, the coach will connect with your supervisor (if you have one) and internal champion between sessions with a general update on how well you are embracing the experience, and to get their most current opinion on your progress.
